It's Literacy and Math Station Time!

Students love station time!  The following pictures are examples of math and literacy stations we have completed during the past few weeks!  

Pack a Backpack- at this station students sorted the picture cards by their beginning sound.  Cards beginning with the /d/ sound were placed in the Dd backpack.  Cards beginning with the /c/ sound were places in the Cc backpack.  After sorting the cards, students picked a few from each backpack to draw and label on their own paper.  Students are doing a great job of sound stretching words and writing the sounds they hear.

Sight Word Scramble- at this station students select a card and unscramble the sight word.  They then write the word on their paper and color their picture to match the color of the word on their card.  I use this color coding system for many of our stations.  It helps me check their work for accuracy rather than just completion.

Fill in the Blank- students select a card and read the sentence.  They then select one word from the box that best fits in the sentence.  Finally, students write the word on their paper and color the picture to match the color of the box on their card.

Ending Sounds Practice- students select a card and determine the ending sound of the picture.  They then write the letter and color their picture to match.

Counting Jars- at this math station students open a jar and count the objects inside.  They then write the number and number word on the correct jar on their paper.

Sight word trees- at this station students select a bag with puzzle pieces inside.  They then put the pieces together to spell a sight word.  Finally, they then stamp the word on their paper.  They repeat this process until they have a new word on every tree.

Panda Bear CVC Words- at this station students select a card and write the consonant-vowel-consonant word on their paper.  They then color their panda bear to match the color of the box on their card.  As I mentioned previously, this helps me check station work for accuracy.

Rhyming Magnet Puzzles- at this station students find the rhyming pieces to make a match.  They then complete the paper shown in the picture above.

Math Stations- Counting and Numbers

Hello Parents!  The pictures in this post are of math stations students have been completing over the past few weeks.  I hope you enjoy viewing them!

At this station students used pattern blocks to make numbers or pictures of various objects (flag, flower, rocket, etc).

At this station students used Chicka Chicka Boom Boom cards to make sets.  Students used play doh to match the set pictured on the ten frame.

For this station students used blocks to count out the set to match the number on the pickup truck.

We recently read the story Miss Bindergarten Goes on a Field Trip with Kindergarten.  In this story Miss Bindergarten and her class visit the post office, library, bakery, fire station, and a park.  The following three stations center around this story and other community helpers we have in our city.

We are also learning to recognize sets in different forms, including a scattered configuration.  At this station students counted the set, recording the number on their paper, and colored their ambulance to match.  

At this station students counted the dots on the ten frame, recorded the number, and colored the mail carrier to match.

At this station students selected a card, identified the larger number, recorded the number on their paper, and finally colored their police car to match.

We also recently read the story Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See.

At this station students selected a character from the story, counted the dots they saw, and recorded the number on their paper.  

At this station students used beads to represent apples on a apple tree.  They counted out the correct number of "apples" to match the number in the basket.

At this station students used rubber bands and geoboards to make numbers.  

This is another Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See themed station.  Students rolled one number die and recorded what they rolled on their paper.  Various dice are available for students to use at this station: number word die, numeral die, and dot configuration die.

Welcome Parents!

Hi Parents!  I am so happy that you have taken the time to visit our classroom blog!  Please stop by our blog this year to see the fun activities, projects, and literacy/math stations we are completing in our classroom.  

One of the first projects your child completed is the activity pictured below.  We read the story The Kissing Hand.  This story always becomes a class favorite and this year was no different!  Chester is a raccoon who is nervous about starting school.  After reading the story we discussed our feelings about starting school.  Students then picked one or two feelings that they felt on their first day of school and glued them to their paper.  They then drew a picture of themselves on their first day of school.  Finally they made and assembled Chester.  These projects will be coming home soon with your child!

Another project was the All About Me Glyph pictured below.  Students made a person to look like themselves.  This is a standard we have in kindergarten, to identify physical attributes.  We talked about our eye color, hair color, etc.  We then made the glyph.

Dress= I am a girl

Shirt/Pants= I am a boy

buttons= my age

We have since counted the boys and girls in our class using the display pictured below.  

Another class favorite is the story Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.  Students love the rhythmic text of this book.  In the book, letters climb up the tree before all falling down.  Students made a coconut tree and then glued the letters of their name climbing up the tree.  

In Social Studies we have been learning about classroom rules.  We have been learning the importance of being a good citizen in our classroom and throughout the school.  We read the story David Goes to School.  We identified the bad choices David made throughout the book.  We talked about the difference in being a Peacemaker and a Peacebreaker (see charts pictured below).  Finally we made David and shared how we can be peacemakers in our classrooms.  Their idea was then written in the speech bubble.

The next five pictures are the literacy stations students have been completing.  The activities in these stations change every six days.  Your child will visit each station one time.  The next time they rotate to a particular station, it will have a new activity in it.  These are the "have to" stations students complete during literacy station time.  After completing their "have to" station, students rotate to a "can do" station.  I'll be posting more in the coming days about our classroom's "can do" stations.

At the car station, students used the alphabet arc pictured below to put the foam tiles in ABC order.

At the truck station, students used pattern blocks to form letters.

At the mail carrier station students used play doh to form letters of the alphabet.  Students formed capital and lowercase letters.

At the train station students found the matching flip flops.  Students then wrote the matching capital and lowercase letters on their paper.  They then colored the flip flops on their paper to match the flip flops from the basket.

At the caboose station students clipped clothespins programmed with a letter of the alphabet to the matching letter on the letter wheel.

Happy Summer!

Hi Parents!  I hope your child is enjoying the first few days of their summer break.  I miss them already!  I thought I would write one final post for the 2011-2012 school year.  I hope this blog has helped to create a window into our classroom this year.  This was my first year using a blog and I'd love your feedback.  Please feel free to comment below if this blog has helped you to stay informed about what we are learning in the classroom.

Below you will find pictures of some of our final kindergarten stations.

 During this station rotation students practiced syllables, making sentences, and vowels.    

Hop to It- at this station students practiced syllables.  First students selected a kangaroo.  Students then said the word represented by a picture.  

 Finally students recorded the number of syllables on their paper and colored their kangaroo to match.

Buggy Sort- at this station students walked around the room to find bug cards.

On each card students noted the picture and determined the vowel sound they heard in the word.

They then wrote the word in the appropriate vowel column.

Butterfly puzzles- at this station students put the magnetic butterflies together by matching the picture with the consonant vowel consonant word.  They then recorded their word on their paper.  On the back of their paper they selected two words to use in two sentences.

Sentence Scramble- students found the word cards in the basket with the matching picture cards.  They then put the cards in order to make a sentence.

Finally they wrote the sentence on their paper.

The Three Little Pigs Vowel Sound Sort- students placed the pigs in the correct vowel house by determining what vowel sound they heard in the picture.

After sorting the pigs, students recorded the words on their paper in the correct vowel house.  

Fish Bowl Ending Sounds- students sort the fish by the ending sound they hear.  They then record the words on their paper.

Stretch It Out- students select a caterpillar from the basket.  They then write the sounds for the picture they see.

Weather Sentences- at this station students select a word from the basket.  They then use that word in a sentence and record the sentence on their paper.

Twisting Up Some Blends- students match the beginning blend with the matching picture card (example: dr-dress).  They then record the word or blend on their paper.

Ten Frame Addition- students roll a ten sided dice.  They color the boxes on their ten frame to match the number they rolled.  Finally, they write an addition sentence to match their ten frame.

The Numbers Before the Rainbow- students select a number from the basket.  They write this number on the rainbow on their paper.  They then write the three numbers that come before it on their paper using a number line.

Missing Zoo Animals- students practice subtraction at this station.  First students select a zoo animal card (like the orange one pictured above).  They then roll one dice to determine how many zoo animals are going to "escape" from their cage.  Students then wrote a subtraction equation.

Shaking Addition- students used red/yellow counters and a cup to complete this station.  Students placed ten counters in a cup.  After shaking the cup and emptying the counters on the table, students counted how many counters landed on yellow or red.  They then wrote an addition equation to match.
