Happy New Year!

Hello Parents!  I hope you have been enjoying the first few weeks of 2012!  In class students shared and wrote about their New Year's goals.  

This is a picture of our hallway display.  Students made themselves and wrote their goal in a speech bubble.  

Students also made a 2012 flip book.  First students glued the year on the front of their book.

Under each flap they wrote about things they wanted to do or goals they had for the year.  I loved reading about what they wanted to accomplish this year.  

The following pictures are of our literacy and math stations from last week:

At this station students sorted picture cards by their ending sound.  They then cut and glued the pictures in the appropriate section on their recording sheet.

Students then stretched the word and wrote the sounds they heard under each picture.

Mystery Mittens- students selected a card from the basket.  After looking at the picture on the card, they then determined the vowel they heard in the middle of the word.  

Finally they colored the vowel on their mitten.  They continued this until all their vowels had been colored.

Loco Cocoa- students selected a picture card and stretched the word to determine the vowel sound in the middle of the word.  

They then circled the vowel on their paper.

At this station students were listening for the beginning and ending sound of the picture card they selected.  After selecting a picture card from the basket, students placed it on their "frog mat."  They then used a dry erase marker to write the beginning and ending sound in the boxes.  

Finally students recorded the letters on their answer sheet.

Snowy Sounds- at this station students selected a snowman.  They then determined the ending sound for the picture on each snowman.

Finally they wrote the ending sound on their recording sheet and colored their snowman to match.

At this station students rolled two dice and added the dots together.  They then colored the sum on their rainbow.

What Comes Before- at this station students rolled one die.  They then wrote the number on their paper and the three numbers that came before it.

Frosty's Ten Frames- at this station students select a snowman.  They then draw the amount on their ten frame to match the number on the snowman.

Finally they colored their snowman on their paper to match the snowman on the card.

Winter Fun Write Around the Room- students searched the room for ten frame cards.  They then completed the sentence on their recording sheet.  

The ten frame cards included numbers 11-20.  We are learning to recognize these numbers and their matching number words.

Students also wrote color words on their paper to complete each sentence.

It's Gingerbread Time!

We have been reading various versions of The Gingerbread Man this week.  The two books pictured above have definitely become class favorites!  We will continue to read more versions of The Gingerbread Man in the week ahead!

At this station students complete an activity called "peppermint push."  First, students select a picture from the basket.  All pictures are consonant-vowel-consonant words (cat, mop, fan, hat, etc.).

Students use the large peppermints to help them segment/stretch the word.  They write the sounds that they hear in the boxes on their recording sheet.

Rhyming Gingerbread Friends- Students find the two gingerbread friends that rhyme.  They then draw the rhyming pictures in the boxes and label their picture with the word by writing the sounds they hear.

Gingerbread Man Color Words- Students match the gingerbread men to the correct bow by reading the color words.

Students then use the letter stamps to stamp their color word and color their gingerbread man to match.

The Stockings Were Hung- at this station students match the picture on the stocking to its word.

After matching the picture to the word, students write about their match on their recording sheet.  They write the word, draw the picture, and color their stocking to match.

Gingerbread Play Dough- Students select a play dough mat that is programmed with a popcorn word.  They use their own container of gingerbread play dough to make the word.

Finally, they write the popcorn word they made.

Rhyme House- in each bag there is a house and picture cards.  Students only place picture cards that rhyme in the house.

After finding all the rhyming picture cards students write/draw the rhyming words on their paper.

Candle Sight Words- students select a popcorn word card from the basket.  They then make the sight word using the popsicle sticks and candle bases.  

After spelling the word, students write the word on their paper.

Sight Word Trees- for this station students make sight words out of the puzzle trees.  

First, students find the word on their tree trunk.  Next, they put the green pieces in order to form the tree.

Once their puzzle is completed they use letter stamps to stamp the word on their paper.  

Missing Letter Train- students place the correct missing letter card on the train.

Students then complete their recording sheet by writing the letter that is missing.  

Picture the word- Students use dry erase markers and erasers to write the missing beginning sounds on the cards.

They then write the word on their paper beside of the picture.

Happy Thanksgiving!

We have been busy completing many Thanksgiving themed stations.  We will be finishing up these stations this week!

Here are some pictures of our literacy stations:

For this station students match pictures to their beginning sound.  

There are pictures for each letter of the alphabet.  Students find the correct picture for each letter card.

Students record eight of their matches on their recording sheet.  Students draw the picture and write the letter.  Students are also encouraged to write the sounds they hear for the word (yarn=yrn, vase=vas).

At the next station, students are finding rhyming matches.

Every number is paired with a rhyming picture card.  

Students record their matches on the pumpkins on their recording sheet.  Students are asked to write the number on one pumpkin and draw the picture on the other (1-sun, 2-shoe, etc).  Students are also encouraged to label their pictures with the sounds they hear.

This is another station that focuses on the skill of rhyming.  Students match the pictures that rhyme.

They then record their rhymes on their paper, including the picture and the word.

At this station students get their own word ring.  The beginning letter of each word is missing.  Students use dry erase markers to write the beginning sound of each word on their word ring.  

Finally, students pick four words to write/draw on their paper.  At the bottom of the paper students select their favorite word to use in a sentence.  

Turkey ABCs- at this station students match capital and lowercase letters on the turkeys.  

They then complete the recording sheet by writing the missing letter.

At this station students are matching the shape to the real life object of the same shape.

They then draw the shape on their recording sheet.  And color their flip flops to match.  

For this station students worked in groups of three.  They spread the scarecrows pictured above across the floor in the classroom.  Then each student got a bag containing cards to place on the appropriate scarecrow.  

Bag 1: number cards 1-10

Bag 2: number word cards one-ten

Bag 3: Dot cards 1-10

After matching the cards, students completed the recording sheet by writing the numbers or number words on the line and coloring their scarecrow to match.

At this station students are practicing the skill of more or less.  Students select a domino from the box.  They then draw the domino on their paper.  

Finally students determine which side of their domino has more dots.  They write this number on their paper.  

Thanksgiving Write the Room- At this station students walk around the room in search of Thanksgiving themed cards that have been posted throughout the classroom.

When a card is found, students record what they see on their paper using a number word.

Last week students wrote about things they are thankful for.  It was so sweet to hear about the things/people they are thankful for that are in their lives. 

 With Thanksgiving being just around the corner I wanted to share with the parents in my classroom that visit this blog that I am thankful for all of your children.  They make me laugh and smile every day.  I am so very thankful to be their teacher.  I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
