Animals in Winter Stations

Hello Parents!  This week we read the story One Little Mouse.  The mouse from the story visits several animals in search for a new home.  We sequenced the events in the story in the chart below.  Students referred to the chart throughout the week.  

The following pictures are from our literacy stations:

Word family stamping- students read, stamp, trace, write, and draw the word on their paper.  They then pick one word from the -at word family to use in a sentence on the back of their paper.

Hedgehog's Words- students select a hedgehog from the basket.  They then write all the sounds they hear to match the picture.  

Finally, they color the hedgehog on their paper to match the color of the hedgehog they selected from the basket.  

Owl Sight Word Practice- students select an owl from the basket.  We have been learning about tall letters, short letters, and letters with "tails."  

Finally students find the letter boxes where their word will fit and write the word on their paper.  

The End is in Sight- students select a bear from the basket and listen for the ending sound of the picture.  

Students then write the ending sound in the box and color their bear to match.  

Migrating Middles- students select a bird from the basket and look at the picture on the bird.

Here are pictures of our math stations:

Wake Me in Spring- students select a cave and count the bears inside.  

They then write the number in the box, draw tally marks to match the number and also write the number word.  Finally they color the bear on their paper to match the color of the bears in the cave.  

Fox Frames- students select a fox from the basket and read the number.  

They then write the number and color their ten frame to match.  

Order the owls- students select the three matching owls from the basket.  They then order the owls from least to greatest.  They write the numbers in the correct order on their paper and color their owl to match the color of the owls selected.  

Sweater Math Match Up- students count the dots on the sweaters and find the matching number on a pair of pants.  

After finding a match, students write the number in the box and color the sweater on their paper.

Students loved spreading all the sweaters and matching pants across the floor!

Winter Literacy and Math Stations

Hello Parents!  Students have been busy this week completing the following literacy and math stations.  Many of our stations had a winter theme including polar bears, penguins, and snowflakes!  

Polar Bear Beginning Sounds- Students match the picture card to the card with the matching beginning sound.  After all cards have been matched, students then complete their recording sheet.

Students record the match on their paper.  For example they would write: I is for ice cream.  I always encourage students to write the sounds they hear.  This is called "invented spelling."  An important kindergarten skill!

Penguin Color Word Match- At this station students place the bow tie on the matching penguin by reading the color word.  After students have attached the bow ties to the penguins they then complete their recording sheet.  

On the recording sheet students pick color words to use in sentences.  They use the penguins to help them spell the color words correctly.

Sound It Out Snowmen- at this station students use letter stamps to stamp the consonant-vowel-consonant word they see on the selected snowman.  They then color the hat and scarf on their snowman to match the color on their snowman card.

Winter CVC Practice- at this stations students select a card from the basket.  They then use a dry erase marker to write the consonant-vowel-consonant words in the boxes.  

Students then record the word on their paper.

Snowflake Sequence- at this station students first find the three snowflakes that are the same color.

They then put the letters in ABC order.  Finally they record the letters on their paper and color their snowflake to match.  This allows me to easily check their paper!

Penguin, Penguin 123- this station is much like the previous station except with numbers.  Students find the three number cards that are the same color.  They put the cards in order from least to greatest.  They then write the numbers in order on their paper and color their snowflake to match.

Penguin Race- at this station students roll the money die and record the amount on their paper.  The object of the game is to fill in all the circles with the amount you roll to help the penguin reach it's home.

How Many Fish Did the Penguin Catch- students select a card and count the penguins.  Students have learned that a full ten frame equals ten.  They start counting at ten and "count on" to see how many fish the penguin ate.  They then record their number in the appropriate box.

Happy New Year!

Hello Parents!  I hope you have been enjoying the first few weeks of 2012!  In class students shared and wrote about their New Year's goals.  

This is a picture of our hallway display.  Students made themselves and wrote their goal in a speech bubble.  

Students also made a 2012 flip book.  First students glued the year on the front of their book.

Under each flap they wrote about things they wanted to do or goals they had for the year.  I loved reading about what they wanted to accomplish this year.  

The following pictures are of our literacy and math stations from last week:

At this station students sorted picture cards by their ending sound.  They then cut and glued the pictures in the appropriate section on their recording sheet.

Students then stretched the word and wrote the sounds they heard under each picture.

Mystery Mittens- students selected a card from the basket.  After looking at the picture on the card, they then determined the vowel they heard in the middle of the word.  

Finally they colored the vowel on their mitten.  They continued this until all their vowels had been colored.

Loco Cocoa- students selected a picture card and stretched the word to determine the vowel sound in the middle of the word.  

They then circled the vowel on their paper.

At this station students were listening for the beginning and ending sound of the picture card they selected.  After selecting a picture card from the basket, students placed it on their "frog mat."  They then used a dry erase marker to write the beginning and ending sound in the boxes.  

Finally students recorded the letters on their answer sheet.

Snowy Sounds- at this station students selected a snowman.  They then determined the ending sound for the picture on each snowman.

Finally they wrote the ending sound on their recording sheet and colored their snowman to match.

At this station students rolled two dice and added the dots together.  They then colored the sum on their rainbow.

What Comes Before- at this station students rolled one die.  They then wrote the number on their paper and the three numbers that came before it.

Frosty's Ten Frames- at this station students select a snowman.  They then draw the amount on their ten frame to match the number on the snowman.

Finally they colored their snowman on their paper to match the snowman on the card.

Winter Fun Write Around the Room- students searched the room for ten frame cards.  They then completed the sentence on their recording sheet.  

The ten frame cards included numbers 11-20.  We are learning to recognize these numbers and their matching number words.

Students also wrote color words on their paper to complete each sentence.
